We've all been there - you know, that feeling of NEVER having anything to wear because, weirdly, the clothes that you used to like are all now horrible, ill-fitting and totally not 'you' anymore.

The trouble is, if we went shopping every time we hated all of our clothes, we'd be broke and suffocating under a pile of only-worn-once garments. Hardly living the dream.

So, before you pull everything out of your drawers in a frantic tizzy and tell your flatmates/family/partner that you hate everything you own, take a deep breath, and follow these simple steps.

1. Clear-out your wardrobe

It may be time-consuming, but a good clothing clear-out is what you need to rediscover the really special pieces in your wardrobe.

Separate everything into five piles: keep (this season), keep (next season), archive, maybe and throw.

Any pieces that you're unsure of, try on with your keeps and ask yourself: does this make outfits that I love? Any items that don't have much use - throw - there's no point in owning something you love if you can't wear it with anything.

2. Re-organize your wardrobe

A lot of the time, finding something to wear can be half the struggle. Keep your wardrobes seasonal - current in your cupboard, previous in storage - and organise into item type. You'll soon find that the easier it is to see your clothes, the easier it'll be to create outfits from them.

3. Fill the holes

And by holes, we mean HOLES. This isn't just an excuse to go out and buy three more impractical dresses you can only wear on special occasions.

This is a chance to buy a white shirt that will go with your girlfriend jeans, tucked into your suede skirt, under your sleeveless jacket and so on, or a pair of skinny jeans that fit perfectly and make you feel fabulous.

4. Have a trying on session

If you're in a fashion rut, a huge trying on session is the best way to find new fashion combos.

Try inviting a friend over who isn't as used to your wardrobe as you are, and let her select some outfits for you to try. Chances are, it will be something you haven't worn in that way before - giving you ideas on how to mix and match your separates in out-of-the-box style.

5. Remove your safety blankets

You know the ones - those go-to outfits that you wear time and time again, ignoring everything else that's a little more challenging to put together.

And by remove - we mean put somewhere that's not easily reached come 7.30am when you're longing for your favourite pair of jeans.

This will challenge you to be more creative and find new favourites to love.

6. One thing, ten ways

Select one of your favourite fashion items and challenge yourself to create ten outfits from it. You'll be surprised at the opportunities you were missing from lazy, wear-what-you-know styling.

7. Play up to social media

Getting dressed in the morning when you really don't love getting dressed in the morning can easily become a case of throwing on whatever is most convenient and then moaning about it all day.

But if you had to post an outfit picture every day, wouldn't you take more care with what you were putting on? If you don't want to do it by yourself, ask a friend to do the same.
